July 2, 2013 – After a lot of research, talking to doctors and prayer, I knew in my heart that a lumpectomy was not what I wanted. If I was going to have to do 3 months of chemo, there was no way I wanted to endure 5 weeks (5 days a week) of radiation on top of it. Not to mention, I was so small chested that I felt certain it would leave me disfigured. Neither of which, was acceptable to me. I made up my mind. I was going to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction. So I cancelled the consultation appointment with the radiation oncologist and told Dr. Shapiro. I was at peace with that decision. That following Friday I had an appointment with Dr. Vinas, the plastic surgeon to discuss reconstruction. I felt very lucky that both Dr. Shapiro and Dr. Vinas worked together. I had three friends who all went to Dr. Vinas, so I felt confident I had the doctors to do the job. The only question left was when will they schedule the surgery?
